Rumour has it that BMW is considering the development of a Euro-market high performance diesel variant of the X5, which will sit below the recently released X5 M.
What’s really interesting, however, is that BMW may end up fitting said vehicle with not one, not two, but three turbochargers. The more the merrier, I guess.
The recipient for this trio of turbos would be BMW’s tried-and-true 3.0 litre diesel inline six, which in twin-turbo form currently generates a healthy 210kW (286hp) and 559Nm (413lb-ft). The addition of an extra huffer is expected to boost output to a grunty 260kW, however it’s unclear whether the turbochargers will be run sequentially, in parallel or in a combination of the two.
It’s rumoured that BMW will also mate the tri-turboed powerplant with a start-stop system and regenerative braking setup, which will make the performance SUV fall under BMW’s Efficient Dynamics flag. An appropriately aggressive bodykit and wheels are a given, but don’t expect it to look quite as wild as the X5 M.
Bear in mind that this is but a rumour for now, and nothing has been confirmed by BMW. The whole tri-turbo malarky sounds a bit excessive, but with BMW (an many other manufacturers) currently embracing turbochargers in a big way, it wouldn’t be entirely surprising to see such an engine surface in the near future.

I can’t imagine how the business case for that could possibly balance out but we’ll find out soon enough I guess.
Yeah, I remember reading about Mercedes Benz experimenting with a tri-turbo setup on their V6s a while back.
Two small turbos just off the exhaust manifold to spool up early, and a bigger single in the middle of the V to provide better flow higher in the rev range.
