General Motors has confirmed that they will be investing approximately $US73 million on upgrading their Shreveport, La. truck assembly plant in preparation for the production of the all-new HUMMER H3T. First seen at the L.A. Motor Show in 2004 the H3T is every tradesman’s dream, combining the rugged looks and stance of the H3 Hummer with the practicality of a ute body.

According to GM the H3T is larger than a midsize truck but smaller than a full-size truck and delivers attitude, versatility and capability and we couldn’t agree more.

The H3T concept (pictured) is close to how we expect the production version to look, carrying through the classic Hummer “wheel-in-each-corner” stance. GM teamed up with Nike for the design of the concept which explains the odd-ball tyres - which are meant to remind us of the sole of a Nike runner...

The rear tray is a full sized, fully functional ute tray with a rear door that features exposed hinges that allow the tailgate to fold flat with the tray floor.

The concept features a turbo-charged version of GM’s Vortec 3500 inline five-cylinder engine, while drive is handled by a heavy-duty Hydra-Matic 4L65-E electronically controlled four-speed transmission.

While the engine options to be offered in the production H3T are unknown we would expect them to include the 3.7-litre in-line five-cylinder currently found in Australian delivered H3’s as well as a 5.3-litre V8 engine option.

Given that GM Premium Brands Australia is currently importing the H3 Hummer wagon it would make sense that we should at some stage also see the H3T. If we do and its as keenly priced as the H3 then expect it to be a runaway success. North American deliveries are expected to begin during 2008.
