Hyundai North America has appointed former General Motors Europe design chief Philip Zak as its new head of design, who will take over from Joel Piakowski who left the firm in December 2008.

Zak began his career with GM in 1988 as a new vehicle concept designer, later moving on to become lead designer, chief designer and design manager. Vehicles penned under Zak include the North American market Chevrolet Equinox SUV and Pontiac G6 mid-size sedan and coupe.

Hyundai North America acting President and CEO John Krafcik described Zak as an “outstanding addition to the design team” at Hyundai America Technical Centre Inc.

"We are proud to add such a talented individual to lead the team of dedicated designers at HATCI that will continue to develop innovative vehicles for both the United States and global auto markets," Krafcik said.

Philip Zak will be tasked with new vehicle and concept design for Hyundai. With the Korean car maker already presenting some handsome new designs of late it will be interesting to see what Philip Zak can contribute in the years ahead.
