Hennessy Camaro HPE550: For When You Can’t Afford The HPE700

Mike Stevens | Apr 3, 2009

Sure, General Motors is going through some tough times (undisputed master of understatement right here), but if the General doesn’t deliver a Z28 version of the new Camaro sometime soon, it’s not going to have any buyers left – they’ll have all bought Hennessy’s new Camaro HPE550.

While Hennessy’s Camaro HPE700 makes a goodly 525kW (700hp), it will also set buyers back a not-so-goodly AU$154,000. The HPE550 promises to be a little more affordable and almost as much fun.

With 420kW (562hp) up its arches, the Hennessy Camaro HPE550 will still be one of the most powerful cars on the road, and for US$31,000 installed (you supply the car, of course), it’s a right bargain.

The Camaro HPE550 achieves its monstrous power-figure courtesy of a Magnuson supercharger and Corsa exhaust strapped to the LS3 in the standard Camaro SS, making a ridiculous 755Nm (557lb-ft) of torque on top of those 420 killer wasps.

US owners can look forward to 0-100km times of about four seconds – a full second off the regular SS – and an 11.9 second run to 400 metres.

Of course, if you’re loaded, you can skip right past the HPE550, and even past the HPE700, as there are 635kW (850hp) and 745kW (1000hp) twin-turbo setups on offer from Hennessy as well.
