Kia VG / KND-5 Concept Unveilled At Seoul Motor Show

With the unveilling of the Kia VG Concept, it’s safe to say Kia’s new design boss and former VW/Audi designer Peter Schreyer has truly arrived.

Bearing all the marks of the ‘Hand of Schreyer’ and introducing styling entirely new to the Kia line – with a new Kia corporate face: the Schreyer Line grille – the Kia VG Concept is a stunning turn of hand for the Korean carmaker.

Powered by Hyundai-Kia’s 3.5 litre ‘Lambda’ V6 on a front-wheel-drive platform mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, the VG concept produces around 206kW.

The strong frontal treatment is set-off with performance-inspired intakes along the front bumper.

The coupe-like panoramic roofline flows above a subtle yet deliberate character line along the profile, leading into a high rear deck with a sharp drop-off and Audi-like tail lights.

No actual photos are available of the interior, though these official renderings give an idea of what Kia has in mind.

The instrument cluster features a full digital display, with the rev-meter doubling as a data display, showing the current track on the audio system and weather forecasts.  Judging by the icons along the top of the display, the screen would also display a calendar, music playlists, car information, and a reversing camera.

This is expensive technology, though, and would likely not make it to production.

Kia says the VG Concept is near-production ready, and it’s probably fair to say that while most concepts end up being a little watered down by the time they reach the showroom floor, this one looks production ready (though that grille is probably fantasy).

Initially the production VG will only be available in Korea, but the Korean giant-killer-in-the-making has plans to launch its new large sedan in overseas markets sooner rather than later.  Whether that includes both left and right-hook will remain to be seen.

Korean cars have truly come of age. Let’s hope the ride and built quality lives up to the look. I am impressed.
This car, and Tesla model S.

That looks fantastic. I’d probably want the grille in black, and take those unsightly “Kia” badges off, but other than that…
