After Ford put plans for the Fiesta ST/XR4 on hold indefinitely, rumours that the Fiesta RS (old model pictured) has also been put on ice come as no surprise.
If it ever does see the light of day, the RS would to be the hottest Fiesta on offer and sit above the ST/XR4 in every way that counts.
We’ve tested the Ford Fiesta Zetec, which sits a few rungs below the RS, and found it to be a capable little performer.
While we bemoan the loss of a hotter Fiesta variant, it’s not hard to understand the reason behind the move.
If Ford feels it can’t recoup the considerable development and production costs, which is highly likely given the new car market’s present state of atrophy, then there simply isn’t a business case for the car.
There’s still some hope though, as neither the Fiesta ST/XR4 or the RS have been officially cancelled. Ford noted that the ST/XR4 could make a return in 2012, but remember what your mum said about counting chickens…

The old model XR4 was by all reports a ripper drive. I’m sure the new model would be even better. Hopefully it makes production.
As for the RS version, at least Ford have launched the new Focus RS which Clarkson describes as unbelievably good and a car that can keep up with exotica in the twisties!
