Having only just taken the wraps off their CR-Z Prototype at the Tokyo Motor Show, Honda has announced their plans to build a production version. Generally considered to be the spiritual successor to the CR-X glass backed hatch-back from way back when, this new millennium version will be a hybrid powered sportscar – at least according to Honda.

CR-Z stands for Compact Renaissance – Zero (huh?) and it is powered by the latest version of Honda’s hybrid IMA drivetrain, whose job it is to deliver low emissions and fuel consumption figures or as Honda say, the CR-Z “will be a compact, lightweight sportscar powered by a hybrid powertrain”.

“Hybrids have always been seen as niche products, and hybrid car design has mostly been based around practicality and versatility. The CR-Z Concept looks stunning, and shows that green cars can be sexy and exciting – but also minimise environmental impact”, said John Kingston, Environment Manager at Honda (UK).

Honda expect to be manufacturing over a quarter of a million hybrids by 2009 with the CR-X expected to become available between late-2009 and mid-2010.
