Ever been befuddled by the subjective nature of competitive drifting? Wonder what it takes to convert a road-going sports car into a decent drift car?

Today’s your lucky day, for in this video champion drifter Rhys Millen steps us through a brief rundown on how drift competitions work and what’s needed to compete. Check it out after the jump.

Many an eye will be watching New Zealand expatriate Rhys Millen and his Hyundai Genesis Coupe drift car at this year’s Formula D championship, and for good reason.

Millen’s Hyundai will be the first ever Korean car to be campaigned in a drifting series, and with automotive publications worldwide gushing about the Genesis Coupe’s dynamic capabilities, big things are expected.

After years of dominance by Japanese sports cars like the Nissan Silvia, Mazda RX-7 and the ancient AE86 Toyota Sprinter (all of which are no longer produced), the addition of the cheap n’ cheerful Genesis Coupe could add some much needed diversity to the field of drifting.

We’re certainly rooting for it, and we’ve got our fingers crossed that Millen and his team will put on a good show in their Korean-built drifter.
