Chevrolet may have just rolled its first Camaro coupe down the line, and although all signs pointed to the cancellation of the convertible, you will be able to buy one… eventually.

Like so many other mid-development models from cash-strapped car makers, the Camaro drop-top has been dogged by reports of its 'on-again off-again' status. However, don't break out the tissues just yet, US mag Motor Trend reports that the convertible will surface - just not before 2011, twelve months later than originally planned.

The fixed-roof model is well placed to bring the pony car fight right to the doorstep of the Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger.

Chrysler has pulled the pin on its rag-topped Challenger, but the new Mustang comes as both a coupe and a convertible. If GM wants to inflict any significant damage to Ford's evergreen Mustang, a topless model is a must.

The convertible Camaro has endured a rocky ride during its development. GM’s current financial woes have played their part and the financial collapse of the German supplier of roof mechanisms has halted development while a replacement supplier is found.

GM claims to be back on track with the convertible, although given the project's flakiness we're not going to count this chicken until it's well and truly hatched.
