WE’VE DRIVEN the base model and tested the sporty 118 TSI, and now it’s nearly here: Volkswagen’s latest hot hatch flagship, the Golf GTI.

TMR is at the launch of the new GTI today, but for now, read on for the full technical details and pricing.

Virtually identical to the GTI concept unveiled in Paris last year, the new GTI features the classic red-rimmed honeycomb grille and big rotary-dial alloy wheels.

The GTI’s turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine is connected to an acoustically-tuned exhaust system terminating in a pair of tailpipes at the rear bumper’s bottom corners, and a ’sound generator’ transfers the engine’s note into the cabin.

Developing 155kW and 280Nm, the Mk VI GTI is the most powerful GTI yet, covering the 0-100km/h sprint in 6.9 seconds on its way to a top speed of 240km/h.

The full 280Nm of torque available from 1700rpm to 5200rpm, translating to a 80-120km/h dash of 7.5 seconds.

The Euro V-compliant Golf VI GTI consumes just 7.3 litres of petrol on the combined cycle, with emissions rated at 173 g/km of CO2.

A six-speed manual is the standard transmission, and a quick-shifting six-speed DSG twin-clutch will be available.

The DSG-equipped GTI boasts the same 0-100 time as the manual model, however top speed is down by 2km/h and economy is slightly worse off at 7.4 l/100km.

The seven-speed DSG available on other models in the Golf range is not offered, likely due to the higher torque and power output of the GTI’s engine.

Electronically-adjustable dampers are standard, and according to Volkswagen, suspension is lower, tauter and more resistant to roll.

Inside, the new GTI gets the classic tartan trim, black headliner, a leather steering wheel and red stitching.

Gloss black inserts, alloy pedals and GTI emblems feature throughout.

TMR is awaiting confirmation on availability, but the official word from Volkswagen Australia is that the new GTI will be in showrooms this year.

Cant wait to see if the GTi-R has the Audi TT-RS’s 5 cylinder and AWD, now that would be something else

Zaffod it’s highly unlikely the GTI-R (or R20) will have the 5 cylinder. More likely to have S3 running gear, ie. 2.0 turbo with 195kW or thereabouts.

But, nothing has been confirmed as yet.

Any ideas on when the new R32 is going to be released? I’m tossing up either the new R32 or a 2010 Evo X MR

Warsidi the R20T if thats what its to be called (or maybe GTI R) is due to be shown on 21st May at the ADAC 24 hour race at the Nurburgring appranetly with sales due to comence in Europe later on in the Year Dont know about Australia

sorry for speeling ya name wrong Wardski was in a rush at the time…..

At this stage, there are no plans for a new R32 and the 3.2l V6 doesn’t meet Euro emissions targets.

Does this mean the R32 that we know is a dying breed??? Maybe I should order one now!!

I would so love a GTI but unless someone buys one for me the closest I will get is driving one in Forza 3.

Woe is me :(

They are in the dealers now.. I saw the new model GTI at the weekend at my local dealer.

glad to see the pricing hasnt changed, though im not to pleased with vw’s half assed effort on the mk6 gti, it’s nothing but a cosmetic upgrade with 1 or 2 bells and whistles.

will definetly keep my mkv till the r20 shows up

Golf R is coming. 2.0T 199kw 4wd. Should be good.

The Golf R will be very good I reckon, but in Aus spec it will “only” have 188kW/330Nm.

With some cars and SUVs now boasting race-car power, which of the following is closest to your MOST STRONGLY-HELD view:

  • I prefer balance between adequate power, steering response and refinement over high power (60.0%)
  • I would always choose a more powerful car over a less powerful one (26.0%)
  • I prefer fuel savings and efficiency over outright power (9.0%)
  • With average speeds declining and travel times lengthening, there is little need for high-powered cars (4.0%)
  • Some cars are now just too powerful (2.0%)
