One of the stars of the Sydney Motor Show was HSV’s new Maloo R8. While the 20th Anniversary Clubsport was a let-down the Maloo R8 was the opposite and garnered plenty of attention.

Part of the HSV line-up for more than ten years, the Maloo in VE guise takes the concept of the sports utility to a new level, with a range of features that include;

• Distinct sheet moulded compound (SMC) rear tailgate,

• 307kW LS2 V8 engine,

• AP Racing four piston brake package,

• Group A Walkinshaw inspired side skirt,

• New glore suede HSV ‘performance’ seats,

• Remote release hard tonneau with release button on main key,

• Reverse parking sensors and

• A ‘performance pack’ option consisting of full leather ‘performance’ seats and 20 inch wheels.

Perhaps the best way to describe the new E-Series Maloo R8 is in the immortal words of HSV’s Chief Engineer, John Clark who said the HSV Maloo R8 truly was a ‘coupe with a damn big boot!’

Two years in the making, the E-Series Maloo builds on the strong dynamic package provided by the long wheel-base Statesman platform. Perhaps the only contentious issue is the odd-ball rear tail-light styling that takes some getting used to.

The tail-light extensions are actually transfers recessed into the specially moulded (SMC) rear tailgate and have been fitted in an attempt to widen the appearance of the rear of the Maloo R8.

“The HSV product group continually pushed the design of our E Series Maloo Ute to the limits and I am extremely pleased with the end result. It really does look like a show car for the road and it must rate as the sportiest production Ute the world has ever seen,” said Design Manager Julian Quincey.

The Maloo R8 will retail from $59,990 (m). Options include automatic transmission for an extra $2,000 that has been programmed to ‘blip’ the throttle on down changes and a ‘performance pack’ which consists of 20 inch wheels and GTS inspired performance seats. This pack will retail for an additional $3,750.

The HSV Maloo R8 is on sale now.
