India’s road-revolution is about to begin, with Tata Motors set to offer the 2009 Tata Nano on the sub-continent from today.

The little people mover – predicted to dramatically transform the driving landscape in India – is slated to go for an even 100,000 rupees (AU$2850).

For your dollars, you’ll get the most bare-bones car the 21st century can offer, but most Indians agree, it’ll still be a bargain considering the alternative: chucking the family on the back of a motorcycle or scooter.


While ‘deluxe’ editions are expected later, the launch version of the Nano will offer a four-speed manual transmission only and lacks many of the modern conveniences the western world has come to take for granted: air conditioning, electric windows and power steering.

Demand for the Nano is expected to be massive, despite a slowing domestic economy.


Tata dealers say they have been overrun with calls from potential buyers seeking information on the car and its availability, with some questioning whether the brand will be able to match supply to demand.

The impact of the global economic crisis on Jaguar and Land Rover sales means that Tata has more than just founder Ratan Tata’s dreams of a brighter future for India riding on the success of the Nano.


Nonetheless, many in the Indian media have likened Ratan Tata to Henry Ford in bringing his dream to reality.

Tata’s dreams don’t stop with India, however. The Indian carmaker is also looking to the European market for success, with a version of the Nano – modified and improved to suit western expectations – may soon appear in European countries as the Tata Nano Europa.
