Honda’s 2009 LAMS-approved CB400 with an inline four-cylinder, four-stroke, liquid cooled 400cc engine, is now available in an all-white colour scheme (there, that’s set the hearts racing).
Adding more than a touch of technical sophistication and safety, it also comes with ABS, electronic fuel-injection system (PGM-FI), Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC).
This is one for learners who are looking for something bigger than a 250, but still want a light, manoeuvrable and rider-friendly motorcycle while learning the ropes out on the road.
Although a smaller capacity machine, the CB400 is designed to offer good on-road performance in a nicely balanced machine.
Honda expects that even experienced riders will be drawn to its sensible combination of accessible power, style, low emissions and fuel economy.
With stainless steel exhaust and new paint, the CB400 should find more than a few friends.
Prices? The standard 2009 CB400 can be had $10,990 RRP (including GST); ABS version is $11,990 (including GST).

I just don’t see the value in this bike. The Suzuki GSX-650FU is also a learner approved bike, has more torque, and is a full sized bike with fairings, practical and has really nice instruments, for $9990.And if you don’t want a faired bike, just get a SV650U for the same price.
I’ve had one of these for about 2 months. Returning to riding after many years absence it was easy to get back into it, light, manoevourable but also quick when needed. Brakes are great. The bike also gets a lot of positive comments and looks. I agree, however, that its a bit pricey when compared to other brands’ larger offerings. But this one has class.
I’ve just got my RE license a couple of weeks ago and have not ridden for about 10 years. My instructer said to wait for July 1 to pick up a LAMS approved bike. I liked the sound of the CB400, but I can get the CB600 for a few thousand less. Any ideas would be much appreciated.
I’d love one of these… we used to have the mid 90s versions as training bikes at a school in the UK and they were quite quick enough to have fun even for an experienced rider. You don’t need 100+hp bikes to enjoy twisty lanes!!
A bit pricey perhaps, but with Honda build quality?

I have been looking for a bike that will be a commuter and a reasonable bike for a run out at the weekend.I am 58 years old and feel that a light bike would be nice.the cb 400 is not being brought into NZ yet so come on Honda,start selling em in NZ .I have owned big bikes in the past but feel that a light bike like this would be a nice change.
I own one. Have had it a few months and it is an awesome bike. Looked at the Suzukis, but the SV is a wierd thing. hunched over and not as relaxed a riding position. The CB400 IS a full sized bike and has MUCH better technology and features that the zooks. Very impressive build quality, integrated security, unbelievable brakes and quick when you are up in the VTEC range.
Can’t recommend it highly enough.
Great bike. I got mine end of June for $9990 on road. (endo of financial year sale) I love her she is great to ride to work which is 25km each way. I recommend this bike to anyone.
