15,000 Lexus RX Models Sold In Australia

After only six years on the Australian market, Lexus has handed over the keys to its 15,000th RX luxury SUV in Australia.

The milestone was achieved as Lexus prepares for the launch of the all-new third generation 2009 Lexus RX 350.

The Lexus RX range kicked off in 2003 with the Lexus RX 330, the first vehicle in Australia to offer a reversing camera as a standard feature.

In 2006, Lexus again raised the bar when it introduced the hybrid RX 400h, which is still the only hybrid luxury SUV in the world.

Lexus Australia chief executive John Roca had this to say of the achievement:

“The RX, in 330, 350 and hybrid variants, has been one of our most popular models - making up a third of our local sales.”

“All-new RX 350 will again set a category benchmark: it is more powerful, more efficient, more comfortable, safer and overall a more enjoyable vehicle to drive,”

The third-generation Lexus RX 350 is equipped with a 3.5-litre quad-cam V6 engine. A healthy 204kW (273hp) of power and 346Nm (252 lb-ft) of torque is available, while average consumption is impressive at 10.8L/100km.

Having been the only luxury SUV to receive four consecutive Australia’s Best Car awards from the Australian Automobile Association, it’s not hard to see why 15,000 RXs call Australia home.

I remember when I first saw that car in Japan as the Toyota Harrier. I’ve always thought it looked better as that, for some reason…
