Formula 1 Championship To Be Decided By Race Wins For 2009 Season

There are changes afoot for that 'very fast procession of cars' that was formerly known as 'the pinnacle of motorsport called Formula 1'.

The F1 points system is to be revised for the 2009 season. It will now shift to a focus on outright wins rather than points accumulation through consistent driving.

Last year's championship winner, Lewis Hamilton, won five races and drove sufficiently well in the remaining Grand Prix events to take top spot. (All fine and dandy except that Ferrari's Felipe Massa won six events.)

In the current system, drivers are awarded 10 points for a win, 8 for second place, 6 for third and so on until the 8th position.

Under the new system to take effect this year, outright wins will determine the championship with the points coming into play in the event of a tie. With drivers hungrier for top spot on the podium, fans may finally see a return to real racing.

And while it may be a 'catch 22' for teams as drivers put it all on the line to go for the win (which may result in more bent cars and big fat DNFs), there won't be many fans complaining.

We like the sound of this change (heck, at this rate F1 will return to being an event worth staying awake for).

    I see this as a very good move for F1. It encourages outright speed, yet also reliability.

    It isn't good enough if your car is just fast yet unreliable, as you won't be able to finish the race and claim the top spot.

    Disagree Joe, does the "one engine" rule still apply? If so can't you see plenty of drivers dropping out with 5/10/15 laps to race if they cant see a win on the horizon - to save mechanical stress. If not, surely they'll turn the revs down and trundle then throw them back up again for the first half of the next race. I can see the 1/2/3/4 place racing being fairly keen, but behind that, who's going to care - theres no advantage going for 7th if you are 8th, so why risk the overtake?it'll end up being like Indianapolis with 5 cars on the track. Plus, wheres the virtue in someone winning one race and comingn last in every other beating someone who was second at every meet? There is a good reason almost all motorsports have a points system - this, to me, is a revolution too far.

      I agree Andy. Too far. will see the win it or bin it in the top 4 and mechanical sympathy race for the 5th to 8th. not a good move. better to give a greater spread of points in the top places to encourage racing.

    This is a slap in the face of Hamilton who dared to win the last championship by one point against a pilot with one more win.

    Protect Ferrari much!!!!!!!!!!!

    Why didn't they give 10 extra points to the pilot with more wins instead of this stupidty?

    Well... next they could give medals just like Olympics... Ahah! That's it... they are trying to be an Olympic sport... it is the only explanation for this... besides Eclestone age

    Anyway!!!!!!!!!!!

    I won't be watching it... that is all!
