Chevrolet Camaro Puts In 8:19 Nurburgring Run

It just wouldn’t be a new performance car launch if the ‘green yardstick’, the Nurburgring, wasn’t brought out for some measuring.

This time around, it’s the Chevrolet Camaro SS, and the result announced by GM is a respectable 8 minutes 19 seconds.

With the focus being on the pointy end of the sports car field, over 8 minutes sounds a bit limp in comparison to its leaf-sprung stablemate the Corvette ZR-1 or the techno-wizard Nissan GT-R.

However, when you consider that the projected price for the Camaro is USD$30,000 (AUD$45,500) - which is about half that of the GT-R or the ZR-1 - suddenly it’s not so bad.

The 8:19 time makes the Camaro faster than its Zeta sibling, the Pontiac GXP - based on the Holden Commodore.

To put that in perspective, it only puts the car a second slower than the absolutely bonkers Lexus IS-F, and faster than a Porsche Cayman S.

That’s still a quick time. Not outrageous. But still plenty good!

8:19 is quicker than an E46 M3.

While I realise that the E46 is a generation old, we are comparing a Commodore with what was apparently one of the best handling sports coupes of its day…and its day wasn’t that long ago.

If GM put as much time and effort in refining models that sell in volume, they wouldn’t now be sliding into bankruptcy. Does Fritz Henderson really believe a carefully creased V-8 coupe with cramped interior dimensions will help sell mediocre models like the Cruze? And what idiot thinks police departments will buy 2-door coupes that can neither accommodate an arrested perp (does he ride shotgun?) nor contain all the hardware to operate communications? The Camaro is the kind of car that got GM into their current mess. Earth to Fritz: GM doesn’t need halo cars–it needs exceptional cars that sell in the millions to pull your sorry butt out of bankruptcy. Sorry, I hold GM stock–this is personal.
