World Car Of The Year, the title awarded by a panel of 48 international automotive journos from 22 countries, is underway yet again. It’s only been running since 2005, but already it has become one of the most prized awards in the global industry.

The criteria for the eligibility is long and varied, but of them all, the most crucial is that the cars must be available in at least five countries on at least two continents, before January 1st of the year of the award.

Since 2006, the award has been available not only to the overall ‘World Car of the Year’, but also to cars in categories not likely to give them an overall victory, but still worthy of attention: World Performance Car, World Green Car, and World Car Design of the Year.

Now, in less than a month, the 2009 World Car of the Year title will be awarded at the New York Auto Show. The cream of the crop have risen to the top, and they’re listed below.

2009 World Car Finalists

2009 World Performance Car Finalists

2009 World Green Car Finalists

2009 World Car Design Finalists

Now, bear in mind, none of the TMR writers are on the panel, so… take the results with a grain of salt.
