Aston Martin’s super-sized touring-sedan-SUV concept, which previewed the return of the Lagonda brand, hides something of a dirty little secret: beneath that stoic, distinctly British-looking bodywork hides the underpinnings of a Mercedes Benz GL-class SUV.

Rumours of a collaboration between Aston Martin and Daimler have been hanging around for a while. Some pundits tipped the two companies would share a V12 powerplant, while others leaned towards a technology sharing agreement.

Now, Aston Martin CEO Ulrich Bez has confirmed that a platform sharing scenario may well be on the cards.

Dr Bez says the company tested a number of luxury SUVs on the market and found the Mercedes underpinnings to be most suitable. The GL-class platform wasn’t left entirely alone, the wheelbase and A-pillar point stay the same but almost all other dimensions have been altered.

The V12 engine found in the Lagonda Concept is Aston’s own too. However, with a range of clean propulsion systems slated for the large SUV it makes sense for Mercedes to supply its expertise in the area of clean diesel and hybrid technologies.

If the Geneva concept receives a favourable reaction, then the Lagonda could be in production in three to five year's time. The Mercedes DNA is expected to stay, but assembly will take place in the UK rather than alongside the GL-class at its Alabama production facility.
