Peugeot has today announced its decision to field a fourth 908 HDi FAP in this year’s Le Mans 24-Hours race. When you are up against the likes of Audi’s all-conquering diesel racers, three entries it seems, is one short of ideal.

With its oh-so-close 2008 Le Mans disappointment still fresh, Peugeot has confirmed that the fourth 908 HDi will be run by Pescarolo Sport.

Pescarolo Sport has significant experience at Le Mans and racing Peugeots in the French Super-Touring Car Championship in 2004 and 2005.

"Given that we were materially in a position to provide a fourth, 2008-specification car which complies with the 2009 regulations, our choice quite naturally went to Henri Pescarolo. In addition to his unique experience of Le Mans, Henri played a part in the very early stages of the 908 project. We are delighted that he has been able to source the necessary backing to enter a 908 HDi FAP in the 2009 Le Mans 24 Hours," Peugeot Sport’s director Olivier Quesnel said.

For 2009, Peugeot has set about improving the 908 HDi’s, including optimising the traction-control system, preventing the radiators from getting choked up and improvements to the wheel hubs to make changes easier and faster. Peugeot has also had to adapt the 908 to the latest ACO regulations which target a significant curbing of performance.

"The engine settings have been completely revised to take onboard the new air restrictor dimensions and the lower turbo pressure which has resulted in a fall in power of approximately 10 percent," Peugeot Sport's Technical Director Bruno Famin said.

Not content to let less power mean less performance, Peugeot has also put the 908 through a weight reduction program, in an effort to reduce weight closer to the minimum limit.

The 2009 24 Hours of Le Mans will be the 77th “Grand Prix of Endurance”, taking place at the Circuit de la Sarthe, Le Mans in France from June 13–14.
