A left-hand drive production version of Hyundai’s Genesis Coupe was one of the highlights unveiled today by the Korean manufacturer at Melbourne’s International Motor Show.
The Hyundai Genesis Coupe and Genesis sedan, and a model line-up growing in strength, are behind Hyundai’s growing market share in the US (Hyundai managed to sell more vehicles in January 2009 there than it did in January 2008). One quick look at the Genesis Coupe will tell you why Hyundai’s star is on the rise.
The model on show featured Hyundai’s DOHC 3.8 litre V6 Lambda RS (Racing Sport) engine - good for 231 kW and 361 Nm. With the V6 onboard, the Genesis Coupe will run from zero to 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds.
Piston cooling jets, aggressive camshaft profiling and tuned-length headers all feature on the V6 engine and showcase Hyundai’s commitment to solid performance and reliability, as well as their rapidly-improving technical know-how.
The Coupe’s sporty persona doesn’t stop with the engine, with dual McPherson struts taking care of handling duties up front while a multi-link setup keeps the rear in check. A torque-sensing limited slip differential is also fitted as standard equipment.
The braking system on the Genesis Coupe is a stand-out feature. Brembo has supplied 340mm x 28mm rotors and four–piston fixed calipers up front while 330mm x 20mm rotors gripped by four–piston fixed calipers handle things out back. Besides from pulling you up in a hurry, the Brembos look sensational behind the Coupe’s 18 inch rims.
Inside the cabin, Hyundai has fitted a full bucket driver’s seat with a walk-in memory system that ensures the backrest always returns to the correct position. A floor-mounted accelerator and push-button start with proximity-key entry area also standard.
All the car’s audio and climate control functions can be set from the steering-wheel mounted buttons and Hyundai also offers an eight-speaker Infinity sound system for those who need to feel the music as much as hear it.
The Hyundai Genesis Coupe’s good looks and solid performance credentials has seen it quickly gain favour with the American tuning industry, take a look at the Rhys Millen Racing tuned example for proof of that.
We can only imagine that Aussie buyers would be equally as enthused, but an Australian release has not been confirmed as yet.

This thing was the ugliest car at the show for me, without doubt, I prefer the looks of the iLoad over this.
The Genesis Coupe isn’t on sale in the US yet.
Actually, it is on sale. Okay, maybe not officially but people are buying them from dealers.

Wowsers! I’ve noticed the Genesis Coupe hasn’t been making everyone’s day, but that’s the most negative feedback I’ve heard on the car yet, by far!
This car sounds like it could be the goods.
Why won’t Hyundai sell it to us?
I don’t think the majority of the Australian public is ready to embrace Hyundai as a contender in the performance sports car segment. Badge snobbery maybe?
Everyone here seemed to be obsessed with European marques rather than our Asian neighbours offerings. In saying that, I was hoping that they bring the VW Scirocco over here.
