Volkswagen has unveiled its Pickup Concept to the Australian motoring public and its likely to create more than a little interest amongst traditional Hi-Lux / Navara / Triton buyers.

The Pickup concept previews the full production model that is currently in development. The 5.18 metre long concept vehicle is not based on any current model VW, but will feature the latest generation of highly advanced, torque strong, fuel saving common-rail turbo-diesels (TDI).

“The Volkswagen Pickup will certainly be a welcome and exciting fourth addition to our expanding range of light commercial vehicles,” commented Phil Clark, Director of Volkswagen Group Australia Commercial Vehicles. “Being the only premium European offering a product in the 1 tonne segment is a great opportunity for Volkswagen. I believe the Pickup will be one of the best selling models in the Volkswagen line-up.”

The Pickup Concept throws a bit of beach patrol into the mix, with its blue roof mounted LED lights and search and rescue stickers plastered along the side of the body. It also boasts a two piece tailgate that cleverly stores essential tools. The double-cab layout includes a centre console with a multifunction touchscreen that controls the radio-navigation system.

Production is expected to kick off later this year at Volkswagen’s Pachero Argentina plant with sales to follow shortly after in the key markets: South America, South Africa, Australia and Europe.

Overall sales projections for the new Pickup amount to around 100,000 units per year.
