According to Mazda, this update of its MX-5 roadster features “an expressive and aerodynamic new Mazda five-point fascia” along with a number of cosmetic, mechanical and ergonomic upgrades.
The bigger ‘eyes’ and new smiley grille freshens up the MX-5’s styling - the TMR consensus is that it is a step-forward over the older model.
“The feisty little Mazda MX-5 Roadster is the Zoom-Zoom heart and soul of Mazda. It embodies our Stylish, Insightful and Spirited brand values more than any other car we make. And that means its significance to Mazda stretches well beyond its performance on a sales chart. No other two-seat roadster can match the MX-5 for driving fun, excitement and value,” Mazda Australia Managing Director Doug Dickson said.

All Mazda MX-5 models continue to feature the perky 118kW MZR 2.0-litre petrol engine, now with a 7,500rpm rev limit (on manual models), driving the rear wheels as the fashion of ‘real’ sports cars, via a six-speed manual or optional six-speed Activematic transmission with paddle shifters.
Sitting at the top of the refreshed 2009 MX-5 range, is a Roadster Coupe with an optional Sports Pack featuring Recaro sports seats and exclusive BBS alloy wheels. The standard equipment list that includes a six-disc, 200W, premium Bose audio system with auxiliary audio jack for MP3 connectivity, cruise control, air-conditioning, height-adjustable driver’s seat and more.
The 2009 Mazda MX-5 will be offered in soft-top and folding hard-top configurations and is due to arrive in showrooms mid-March.
The 2009 facelift of the MX-5 coincides with the little sports car’s 20th birthday.

Sorry to comment on wheels again,
I don’t mind the new ‘cheery’ facelift but those wheels don’t do the car any favours. I’m not sure what they say about the cars sporting aspirations or more laid back cruising appeal.
I was a fan of the launch special edition wheels, hopefully there are a few options available to buyers.
