Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera coming to the Sydney Motor Show

Hot on the heels of Ferrari announcing that they are bringing their 430 Scuderia to the Sydney International Motor Show comes Lamborghini’s retort and it involves a lightweight supercar of their own – the Gallardo Superleggera.

The Superleggera (Italian for “superlight”) features extensive use of carbon fibre for the bodywork, including the rear diffuser and underbody covering, rearview mirrors, door panels and the central tunnel’s covering, helping to shave 100kg from the weight of the standard model Gallardo.

Further reductions in weight were achieved by replacing certain glass surfaces with transparent polycarbonate, including the engine cover, which has the added benefit of showing off the Gallardo’s 5.0-litre V10 engine.

The modifications didn’t stop with weight reduction and the engine itself has seen an ECU tweak to produce an additional eight kilowatts, raising the total to 390kW. The result of the slight increase in power and crash-diet is a Gallardo that can accelerate to 100km/h in a claimed 3.8 seconds.

Lamborghini Australia are already feeling the buzz in the run up to the motor show in Sydney.

“I’ve never heard so many people enquire about what we’re doing at the Australian International Motor Show. I think they’re going to be really excited when they see the Gallardo Superleggera,” said Lamborghini Australia’s Andrew Smith.

The 2007 Australian International Motor Show runs from 11 to 21 October. Details of dates, opening times and ticket prices - along with updates on new models - are available at www.australianmotorshow.com

I actually saw one of these on the Eastern Fwy in Melbourne last weekend. Very cool looking cars. Quite small though!
