As the i20 five-door’s Australian debut at the Melbourne Motor Show draws near, Hyundai is gearing up for the unveiling of its striking three-door sibling at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

To keep our minds on the topic, Hyundai has revealed a couple more photos of the i20 three-door to go with the batch offered just over a week ago, as well as some more technical details.

Despite the information we had when we last touched on the i20 three-door, the latest official information is that it will be offered with either a 58kW (78hp) 1.2 litre four-cylinder 'kappa' petrol engine with 119Nm (87lb-ft) of torque, or a 1.4 litre diesel. Hyundai expects the petrol unit to be the best seller for the model.

Aimed at younger buyers, the i20 shares much of its styling with the five-door and its i10 and i30 cousins. The longer doors better accentuate the character lines running down the side of the car. Styling-wise, there is a funky edge to the i20's on-road stance (as these photos show) which should appeal to those younger buyers.

Built on the same 2.525mm wheelbase and weighing 10-kilograms less than the i20 five-door, the new model offers a well proportioned exterior and an interior that Hyundai says will comfortably accommodate adult passengers in the front and rear seats.

The i20 three-door, like the five-door, features six airbags as standard, as well as active head restraints which minimise the effects of whiplash in the event of a collision.

While there’s no pricing for the Aussie market yet – or official word on whether the three-door will make it to our shores – the i20 three-door will sell in the UK for £450 (AUD$1001) less than the five-door model, starting at £8,195 (AUD$18,227).
