Not long after a pristine original XY GTHO Phase 3 Falcon went under the hammer for $AU650,000, another two GTHOs have hit the market.
Shannons Auction Group of Melbourne told TMR that they expect the winning bid to be in the range of $AU650,000 - $AU800,000 for the 1971 the XY GTHO Phase 3 pictured above.
What is it about these iconic Aussie muscle cars that send the prices through the roof? Released in 1971 the XY GTHO Phase 3 was the fastest sedan in the world at the time. Sporting a 351 Cleveland V8 with a four-barrel Holley 780 cfm carburettor and a higher compression ratio of 11.5:1, a combination which ensured power was nothing short of 275kw (370hp) at 5400 rpm.
The ‘HO’ stood for ‘Homologation Option’ and meant you got bigger brakes, stiffer suspension, a front spoiler, a choice of 3 differentials and an optional close-ratio gearbox making the production GTHO very similar to the race version.
Only 300 Falcon XY GTHO Phase 3s were ever produced and Shannons estimates there are less then 150 getting around today. Not a bad little investment considering the purchase price of $5,638 back in 1971!
The pictured XY GTHO is due to go under the hammer at the Sydney Motor Show Auction next month and we’ll be there to give you all the updates.

Fantasitic vehicle the Ford xy gt HO but saying it was the worlds fastest vehicle in 1971. But the Mercedes 300sel 6.3 300 bhp @ 4000 rpm 368 lb-ft @ 2800 rpm and Curb Weight: 4035 lb (1830 kg
What is the comment? It doesn’t really say anything. What was the comparison, and whilst I know the GTHO XY was very fast, Surely amongst all the great machines available in 70/71 there were some fast machines that were at least equal. Before I get stuck into my extensive library on Cars from Antique/Classic/Muscle/Hot Rod/Blown etc etc etc, I find it fairly hard to accept this statement. Come on all you car fanatics, lets hear from you. I find it fairly shady.
Cody…..it WAS the fastest 4 DOOR car in the world in 1971………not the fastest of all cars………..ok?
dudes dudes it was the fastest 4 door stock production car in 71 and was for a few years but where the goes o about the merc 300 bhp well it says the ho has 300 but they had to say that other wise the insurance company would not cover them the ho stock had around 380 hp
Thank s guys for all your input but on paper the Merc 300sel 6.3 has the worlds fastest production vehicle, what other things tweek up mor bhp is another thing which is great but on paper. I own a merc and a xy so u could say i own 2 of the worlds fastest lol
Whilst I can appreciate the GTHO..the prices are just outrageous. Sure it has a Bathurst history, but its not like it won or competed at Le Mans and at the end of the day, it’s a mass produced Fairmont with a worked V8…which can/could be bought seperately by anyone thru Ford. As for styling, yes it’s tough but it’s just your basic boxy sedan shape… IMO the values of these cars are more a reflection of great economic times in the mining, building and transport industries as buyers for these cars seem to almost always come from these 3 industries. Somehow I can’t see these cars being worth $$$ anywhere but here..maybe in the US…where as a 1971 Porsche 911 RS is worth big $$$ on every country on the globe.
i actually had and drove a phase 3 in 1971 with the rev limiter disconnected. and took it for a top speed run and managed approx 155mph at 7100rpm and a 13.7 over the quarter mile at the drag strip on the factory tyres. this really was the greatest car of its time and those figures are very accurate. as the needle went of the speedo ..
