Indoor Drive-In Theatre - Smart Fortwo Supplied

Ever wondered what happened to the drive-in theatre? Well, in a nutshell, people stopped driving into them. If you are a child of the 70s or earlier, you will likely have fond memories of drive-in theatres, as they were a regular night out for many folk ‘back in the day’.

Interestingly, Melbournians will soon be able to relive Saturday nights of old and experience going to the drive-in theatre just as they remember it.

From February 24, the No-Vacancy gallery in Melbourne’s QV centre, located on Swanston Street in the CBD, will screen a variety of independent films, with a catch. Guests will be able to enjoy the entertainment from the comfort of a Smart fortwo.

Nine of the little two-seater smart cars will be parked in front of a cinema screen inside the gallery, providing guests with the opportunity to relive their youth, or sample something similar to the old drive-in experience for the first time.

Unfortunately, the Smart fortwo is a little on the small side for amorous couples, who are more likely to pull a muscle than successfully ‘throw a leg over’.

The audience for each performance will be limited to 18 guests, the amount of people that will comfortably fit in the nine two-seater fortwos.

Sponsored by Smart Centre Melbourne, the entertainment programme will include a selection of films by Madman Entertainment, one of Australia’s leading independent film distributors responsible for memorable movies such as Kenny and Akira.

The high-jinks will commence on Tuesday 24 February and run until Sunday 1 March, with screenings every evening at 8pm. Tickets can be purchased by visiting www.indoordrivein.com.au or contacting Smart Centre Melbourne on 03 9690 8833.
