The successor to the F430, which many believe will hit showrooms as the Ferrari F450, will be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in October this year.

Details of the F450 are thin on the ground, though it’s expected to see an enlarged version of the 4.3 litre V8 found in the F430, and combined with direct injection it should be good for more than 370kW (500hp).

That power will pass through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, based on the unit used by the Ferrari California. As with the F430, the transmission will benefit from the ‘manettino’ switch found on the steering wheel, which allows the driver to choose between various handling and performance modes.

The F450 also signals Ferrari’s switch to embracing greener materials, and a stronger commitment to new weight-reduction methods.

One rumour has it that sources inside Ferrari are claiming that the F450 is as fast around Ferrari’s Fiorano test track as the track-ready F430 Scuderia.

European Ferrari F450 sales should begin late this year after the Frankfurt Show, or early in 2010.
