In recognition of the role that Australia has played in the development of the Landcruiser over the last five decades, Toyota have chosen to debut their new 200 series Landcruiser to the world at the Sydney International Motor Show in October. While at first glance the new 200 series Landcruiser doesn’t appear a whole lot different to the model it is replacing – don’t be fooled.

Toyota are quick to point out that their new ‘Cruiser’ includes the following notable features:

• More powerful Petrol and turbo-diesel V8 engines

• Australian-developed KDSS suspension system

• World's first "crawl control" system

• Multi-terrain anti-skid braking system

• Stronger and bigger

• Enhanced performance on all surfaces

Toyota's completely redesigned LandCruiser wagon New LandCruiser is certainly bigger, in fact its 60mm longer, 30mm wider and the roofline is 15mm higher and we thought the outgoing model was big enough.

According to Toyota the Landcruiser’s platform has been completely redesigned and retains a full-frame structure, which has been strengthened to increase safety, reduce noise and vibration and enhance interior comfort. It’s also considerably larger being 60mm longer, 30mm wider and with a roofline that is 15mm higher.

Possibly the biggest improvement to drive-ability will be through the change to a double-wishbone front suspension with coil springs over the previous torsion-bar set-up combined with an Australian developed Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS).

KDSS was originally developed by WA based company Kinetic and features a hydraulic system that controls the front and rear stabiliser bars to improve on-road stability. Off-road performance is also improved by the disabling of the stabiliser bars when required to allow greater wheel travel.

Australian LandCruiser models will feature the choice of a new turbo-diesel V8 engine or a V8 petrol engine which Toyota have improved with their intelligent variable valve timing system. Both engines are said to output considerably more power than their predecessors while the turbo-diesel engine offers a substantial increase in torque.

The 200 series LandCruiser petrol models will feature the world's first "crawl control" system for driving on surfaces such as rocks, sand or steep hills. Crawl control automatically controls the engine and brakes to maintain very low speeds with minimal spinning or locking of the wheels. It allows for delicate speed adjustments between approximately 1km/h and 5 km/h. Three speed settings can be selected with the turn of a dial.

Power cane be split between the front and rear wheels via a Torsen® limited-slip centre differential built into the transfer unit of the Lancruiser's full-time all-wheel-drive system, while a newly adopted multi-terrain anti-skid braking system provides improved braking performance on all road types.

Safety advances include the stronger body structure, vehicle stability control and up to 10 airbags - front, side and knee airbags for the driver and front passenger, side airbags for the outboard second-row seats and curtain shield airbags for all three rows.

On the inside the new larger 200 series LandCruiser seats up to eight people, while available optional features include Smart Entry and Smart Start, Bluetooth™ mobile-phone connection, satellite navigation and steering wheel controls.
