Back in September last year, we talked about the rumours of a diesel version of the upcoming MkVI GTI, and the R42: a four-cylinder turbo, all-wheel-drive model intended to succeed the Volkswagen R32 at the top of Golf hierarchy. This seemed almost prescient when the news came through that the R32 would be dropped, and the GTI would receive a 10kW power boost.

But that wasn’t all of it. A third possible model floated by the rumour-mongers was the GTI Plus: a more powerful version of the ‘regular’ GTI. While nothing’s been said since about the other two, the GTI Plus story has been revived again today.

The rumour mill is now flogging the idea that the good folks at VW will bring us an enhanced version of the 2009 GTI – possibly called something neat like GTI-R or R20 (but then, with the previous R names R32, R36, and R50, R20 doesn’t sound quite as inspiring) – and that it could be powered by the Audi S3’s tweaked version of the GTI’s 2.0 litre inline four-cylinder FSI engine. If this is the case, the GTI-R would be looking at an increase of about 50kW over the GTI’s output.

Without the six-cylinder R32 in the lineup, the GTI-R would surely be a welcome addition to the family. For now, we’ll just have to wait and see.
