The already fuel conscious Smart ForTwo is about to give up the drink for good. Smart is planning to release an electric version of their diminutive two seater in the second half of 2010.

Already testing on the streets of London, Smart is hoping to roll the vehicle out in limited numbers before full-scale production of the cars lithium-ion battery packs begins in 2012. The ForTwo EV will be built alongside the regular Smart at parent company, Daimler’s French factory.

Despite the ForTwo already using only 4.7 litres per 100Km or 4.4 litres per 100Km in Micro Hybrid Drive versions, Smart is keen for their cars to be seen as green-leaders. No word has been given yet on the expected range from the Smart EV.

The ForTwo EV is expected to be introduced in Europe first, before being introduced into the US. Other world markets are still being considered.
