Designed by Nouphone J. Bansanine during his internship at Volvo, the SC90 was conceived to provide Volvo with an entrant in the four-door coupe supersports category. With the likes of the Aston Martin Rapide, Porsche Panamera, and Maserati Quattroporte in the minds of buyers, there’s never been a better time to pounce.
Looking at its singularly smooth profile, uncomplicated yet futuristic styling, and supercar intentions, the SC90 represents a brilliant and unexpected move by the Swedish carmaker, known in the not-too-distant past for its boxy and uninspired design.
Nouphone’s thinking seems to follow the same lines.
“My proposal was based on the growing trend for premium four-door coupes, taking the concept to the extreme by exploring and developing a premium four-door sportscar for the year 2015.”
Nouphone’s hopes for the SC90 are to see it become the flagship model for Volvo, reshaping the brand into one recognised as a home for passion and emotion.
Utilising concave and convex surfacing, the SC90 takes the traditional supercar style to new extremes into the form of a four-door coupe. Bansanine describes this take as a “more complex and fresh second read” of the classic style.
While the profile of the SC90 Concept may be a sleek combination of classic and modern, with its massive rims filling out the high wheel arches, the face is all 21st Century. Aggressively raked blacked out headlights lead into a wide-open six-sided grille featuring the classic Volvo sash, flanked by subtle yet deliberate side intakes and an equally subtle diffuser.
The rea-end bears an almost 1930’s style to its high shape, yet clearly defined by its futuristic intentions, with narrow slit-like tail-lamps wrapping sharply round from the profile across to the point of the rear deck. High-mounted exhausts rest in the rear panel, above the aggressive rear diffuser.
If this is the sort of work young Bansanine has ahead of him, good things await the rest of us.

Now thats the spirit Volvo! Get it into production already.
Alright, who’s the smartypants who swapped the Aston Martin badge for a Volvo one?
I love it, but based on those pictures and video alone … the cabin must be tiny! But quite an achievement for the young designer to pull that off, surely bigger and better things await for him in the future.
Is that just me or has Volvo did a paint shop pro on some Jap Cars. The front is an RX-8 modified and the rear is the new lexus supercar.!!! Only a fool would think it’s innovative. We past the year to thousand time to re-asses and make your own shell and broaden your Horizon. Look at the concept Citreon
I’m embarassed for Volvo by that young “designer” give me a break! 1930 stylying?? TMR sure is a young motoring journo site because who would not fail to see the similarities of the two car RX8 front - Lexus rear.
This site pathetic, you too Wana including Tony D, moron you think that’s an Aston? I’ve went to a site written by a bunch of numb skull
Is that even english Andy Bogan?
I’ve run your comment through an online translator and it came out as follows;
“I’m an illiterate tosser”
Now that I agree with!
You’re (as in ‘you are’) not your. ‘Your’ would be used in a sentence like this;
It is reasonable to suggest that the illiteracy rate in Australia is on the increase given YOUR inability to write correctly Andy Bogan.
Andy Bogard, what have I done to warrant an insult from you?
I am merely complementing the young designer’s achievement during his internship with Volvo.
A young car designer has to start somewhere, and this creation is better than some of the automakers concepts out there.
Sure it borrowed some styling cues from other cars, but this is far from uncommon in the automotive design circles.
Here’s an example: The Honda CRZ (made by Honda) concept looked remarkably like a Mazda RX8 (front fascia) from memory, why don’t you send the Honda team a letter stating that they are morons too?
And the latest production version of the Hyundai Genesis sedan has Mercedes, BMW and Accord all over it. Might as well send the same letter to them too.
How about the BMW Bangle butt? A lot of automakers have copied that too in their production cars.
Take a chill pill, mate.
7/10 nice attempt at a troll, loved the broken English.
Douchebag’s original comment does have a hint of truth to it though, I’m also struggling to see anything original about this piece, it’s a mishmash of different, currently “trendy” design cues.
Although the end result looked like crap, I still think the C30 was a much more refreshing change for Volvo.
However, current ‘trendy’ designs will always sell better than out there designs, so from a marketing perspective, this really IS a young designer to keep your eye on
“I’ve went to a site written by a bunch of numb skull”
The only numb skull writting stuff on this site is YOU soft serve.
reminds me of an S15.. i like it a lot. Would be better if they made a 2 door version too
I think it’s a fabulous looking Coupe/Sedan, but priced way way out of the average numb nuts shopper, who to better impress the equally numb nuts neighbors, would rather have a M Miserable bends, a Bowel Movement Working, or a Porch.
Most people will not be able, in these times, to afford this car. My favorite Volvo is the S80 Premier Elite Sedan, the one with 311 H.P. and all wheel drive and the ‘fridge built into the rear fold down armrest and the cut glass Sweedish stemware built into the rear package shelf with ALL the optional goodies. The interior in that car surpassed any other car, short of a Bentley or Rolls.
Volve has NEVER advertised the S80 correctly and shoppers (other than prior oweners) never even consider the S80 !
They are all “Label” buyers, rather than car-people who compare! The s60 is BORING and the S40 is teeny tiny. good for 5 foot one inch females.
i agree the design looks really good i think the young designer is going to have alot of good fortune with volvo if this is anything to go by. As for the thing about the s40 being tiny and for females who are 5 foot 1 im male and am 6 foot 1 and own a s40 t4 and there is still loads of room in it
I think it’s a great leap forward for Volvo, remember this is Volvo we are talking about. And talk about shrugging off the box/safety stereotype.
Even as a concept that will eventually be watered down if ever put into production there’s some nice styling cue’s and it looks like a car many would want to be seen in. The exhaust note in that video sounds pretty damn attractive if you ask me too.
It’s certainly not the first thing I would associate with Volvo on first viewing and that’s a good thing, looks like good things to come from Volvo and a fresh look at their design which in all honesty hasnt changed much in the last 10 years.
I like what I see and it would be great to see this coming to life at a car show near me soon.
whats the lexus supercar called?
It’s funny how everyone’s always eager to assrape Volvo and Toyota, the probably two most hated companies in the industry. Also, how come no one noticed that Toyolex bit a lot of the general curvature sucess of the old S60 design for their L-finesse series (starting with 2004 GS I beleive). This is not an official Volvo design but it was aproved by Volvo. Biting off Rapide is moot as Volvo people were involved in developing Rapide, it itself takes cues of S60, and Rapide design probably wen’t through Horbury as the then design director at FoMoCo.
For this to truly be a volvo it needs shoulders in the back (bite off new S60 if you ask me) and more Volvo-ish curvature on the sides with a bit more window space, a comfty “executive” inside with more legroom on the back than the back doors hint at, and it could easily be the brand’s flagship and yes, even suceed at getting volvo some attention it badly needs.
