Subaru Legacy Concept Breaks Cover At Detroit

Hmm, this might not be a look for everyone. Building on the earlier teaser image, Subaru’s Liberty Concept in ‘Ultimate Silver’ semi-gloss finish has appeared with a deeper grille, more aggressive LED headlights and large air intakes on each side of the drooping snout. Heavily flared wheel arches break up the otherwise slab-sided lines and the look is completed with darkened tail-lights and integrated dual exhausts.

Door-mirror duties are taken care of by rear-view cameras.

Power comes from Subaru’s 3.6 litre six-cylinder boxer engine and is put to the ground though the manufacturer’s trademark symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive system via an automatic transmission. Inside the car though is where Subaru has really let loose.

The ‘High Definition’ two tone interior is trimmed in pearl white leather with a blue sheen for the seats, while door trims and dash are swathed in metallic black cow-hide with brushed aluminium highlights. The cabin abounds with touch-screen monitors in the front and rear of the console as well as the front seat headrests. Climate control, navigation and audio control are grouped together as part of the touch-screen interface.

While some of the interior features aren’t likely to make it to production, the solid exterior design points the way to the next generation Liberty sedan. The wing motif in the front grille captures Subaru’s current design theme and the framed doors indicate that the next Liberty will be chasing higher levels of interior refinement.

The extended wheelbase and larger dimensions also help to set the car apart from the Impreza, which has grown in size from its previous generation.

Wow this is spectacularly ugly. Those headlights especially which look like they are straight off a Merc R-class.

It’s always the way, isn’t it? Subaru makes beautiful car. Everyone rejoices. Subaru makes new model, it’s absolutely craptacular. They did it to the Impreza, and now they’ve done it to the Liberty- except it’s not just crap, it’s UTTERLY HORRENDOUS. You couldn’t pay me to drive that.

My folks love their ‘08 Outback, it looks fantastic… but they WON’T be replacing it in the future that looks anything like this, that’s for sure!

Subaru must be the new Ssangyong … their whole range is craptacular looking. Doesn’t do justice at all to them or their fans.

Fix the headlights and that’d be a decient looker.

Everything about that car screams “not ready for production”. When is the current Liberty going to finally get replaced? It’s seen more nose jobs than Michael Jackson.

They need to fix the headlights … and then some more …. much much more.
Kudos to the interior design, but no one will bother to look inside if the outside is not welcoming at all.
Do any of us ever bother to find out what Ssangyong’s interiors are like?

I can remember the feeling of joy when I first laid eyes on the current liberty back in 03. I was in japan at the time and the car was black.
When I saw these pictures earlier I didnt feel the same except only now just a slight feeling of dread.
It seems to borrow a bit from mazda6 around the arches, a bit of accord euro and I can even see some old bangle bmw hues in the trunk lid.
The front end is arrestingly subaru though as their current mandate continues to rely on shock tactics.
Either way I’ll let it evolve.

The front end is horrendous, seems as though they want to go through the whole tribecca incident again. Please someone tell subaru to design a decent front end otherwise i’m going to bmw

It seems that what I like to call the “Impreza disease” has finally infected the only car in Subaru’s lineup that isn’t mirror-breakingly ugly.

I find it sad Subaru can’t get over the fact they are NO LONGER involved with the aviation industry anymore, so their front grille designs are just meaningless and ugly. And this is coming from a Subaru owner.

PS. They should also NOT try to create future ‘rally legacy’ based designs in the future, having dropped from WRC this year.

nice bum, shame about the face

You have BMW’s number handy?
The whole Subaru line-up is pretty much ugly at the moment, bar the current Liberty.
It’ll take a while before they do a full facelift.

I think I may be one of only a few people that really like the concept, in fact I hope that it stays mostly the same to production considering the 5th Gen Liberty will most likely be my next car (currently drive 2002 model).
Sure, it isn’t 100% perfect but I like it, I do think the roofline could be lowered a little, but until I see it in person that could make headroom terrible changing that.
Also the paintjob on the actual car (non-cgi) is shocking. A nice metallic black or green would do the job I think.

Guys, Remember this is a concept. The current model liberty first concept had a front grill that could swollow my house but look how they actually produced it. And when taking into account the current concervative curves and design of the impreza and forester I can’t see the next gen Liberty being this dramatic. Soften the front grill and reshap the lights similar to forester/impreza and I think they will be on another winner!

I just hope that the GT comes in a 3.0 turbo!

Is everyone doing Chris Bangle boots these days? They don’t look good on 5 and 7 series BMWs, why would Subaru think they could do it better.

Take the time to get used to the images, and this car grows on you quickly. The current Impreza was bagged severely initially too, but look how many are on our roads - heaps! Although I do agree that there are better looking cars out there, this Liberty has a more aggressive stance and the back is particularly nice. I hope they give the sportier versions some good looking bodykits and spoilers and a 3.0 turbo! The rrofline could be lowered a little too. Awesome cars to drive!

Looks wicked - different, who wants to look like a BMW 3 Series - booooring!

In any case I reckon its a long way from the production version - those side mirrors look like like cameras! Im sure that’ll never make production!

I owe a Legacy GT 08 , always like Subaru. If this car hits the market I’ll trade mine for the new Legacy right away. Love it

Where is the Impreza? Why you guys didn’t featuring the STI? STI is better than EVO, seriously. You guys are so biased! STI beats all those lousy cars.
