We covered the guts of the details on BMW's Z4 mid last month - when they escaped onto the net - but that didn't stop BMW from making a big song and dance about its new sports convertible. Some fancy wire-work saw the wraps removed on the third generation Z4 at Detroit and, thankfully, there were no unwelcome surprises.

The new Z4 still looks sharp and while we bemoan the loss of the of the high-revving 3.2-litre six, the 3.0 litre twin-turbo model should make do nicely. There are also 2.5 litre and 3.0 litre naturally-aspirated engines available for those who are more about 'show' than 'go'.

The new model comes with a retractable hard top, instead of the old soft top, which folds in and out of place in around 20 seconds - all electronic of course. Pricing details have not been released as yet, but we're expecting more information closer to the actual release of the vehicle.

While not revolutionary, BMW has done enough on the new Z4 to ensure it remains fresh in today's market. There is something irresistible about the notion of top-down motoring on some twisty coastal road, the rush of wind in the ears and twin-turbo six on song... to that end the Z4 should do nicely.
