While there’s still no word on when we can expect to see the Hyundai Genesis on Australian roads, a 'gong' from US consumer publication Consumer Reports must surely add a boost to the cries of Aussie Hyundai dealers to get the car here, and soon. This comes after Hyundai’s Tau V8 was rated as one of the 10 best engines for 2009.

Consumer Reports publishes reviews and comparisons of consumer products based on results from its in-house testing facilities. It has rated the Hyundai Genesis as the top ‘upscale’ sedan in the US market, beating out the Acura TL, Lincoln MKS, Nissan Maxima, and Holden-designed Pontiac G8.

In a bit of a twist though, Consumer Reports falls short of recommending the Genesis to buyers, due to a lack of reliability data for all but the Acura TL. With no reliability data on the Genesis, it therefore gives its official recommendation for buyers looking at the upscale sedan class to the Acura TL.

The US$36,000 (AU$50,568) Hyundai Genesis – also a finalist for the 2009 North American Car of the Year – was praised for its affordability and feature set, based on the 3.8 litre V6 test car, making 216kW.

"The Hyundai Genesis rivals high-end luxury sedans but costs considerably less," David Champion, senior director of Consumer Reports' Auto Test Center said. "Its luxurious and spacious interior and quietness far transcend its relatively modest price."

Champion's words sound an awful lot like the sorts of quotes flying around back when Lexus first started gaining recognition as a 'more for less' brand. Are we witnessing the birth of the next Lexus?

Aussies can remain proud, however, with the Pontiac G8 declared "a bargain sport sedan that can challenge the performance of models from BMW and Mercedes."
