It's out with the old and in with the new for Jaguar's XF diesel, with the current 2.7 litre oil-burner making way for an all new twin-turbo AJ-V6D Gen III S 3.0-litre V6 in 2010.

The new mill makes more power, more torque and uses less fuel than its predecessor and will put the Jag diesel on par with its more powerful competitors.

The current 2.7 litre unit is good for 157kWs but is easily trounced by the new engine, which will be available in two power levels. An entry level 179kW version or a 205kW version that will feature in the higher spec models. The real story here though is not the extra power, it’s the extra torque. There will be an astonishing 600Nms on tap from as low as 1600rpm.

All of this extra grunt will be enough to push the big cat from 0-100km/h in 5.9 seconds, on to an electronically-limited top speed of around 250km/h. This will all be achieved while sipping less fuel than the outgoing 2.7 litre unit. Combined economy figures are down around ten percent to 6.7 l/100kms.

"With CO2 emissions of 179g/km, 42mpg average fuel economy and 0-60mph acceleration in 5.9 seconds, this is another great example of Jaguar delivering unrivalled performance while at the same time taking the level of refinement in diesel engines to a whole new level," said Mick Mohan, Jaguar Programmes Director

The huge leap forward in output and efficiency is largely due to the introduction of a 29,000psi common-rail fuel system, a particulate filter and unique turbo setup.

In most driving conditions, a single variable-geometry turbo does all the work. Take the new oiler's revs past 2800rpm though, and a second turbo will spin up to provide the extra urge as required. A mix of power and efficiency that may just impress the tree huggers as much as is does the petrolheads.

Wearing 20-inch wheels, an aerodynamic boot lid spoiler and discreet 'S' badging, and sporting more of everything that matters - like power, torque and efficiency - there is little not to like about the Jaguar XF V6 Diesel S.
