The next generation hot hatch from the Blue Oval is just around the corner, and Ford UK has let slip some official details on what we can expect.

We already know a few details on the 2010 Ford Focus RS, but up until now we had no idea that the turbocharged grocery-getter will blast from 0-100kph in 5.9 seconds and hit a top speed of 264kph. Not quite as fast as the previous estimate of a sub-five-second sprint time, but still pretty darn quick nonetheless.

Thanks to a Quaife torque-sensing limited-slip differential and some clever suspension trickery that Ford calls "RevoKnuckle", the RS manages to channel all 221kW and 400Nm of torque to the front wheels with nary a hint of torque steer. All wheel drive? Ford says it isn't necessary for the Focus RS.

As well as the RevoKnuckle system, the RS also boasts 19-inch wheels; 235mm-wide tyres, stiffer springs, harder dampers, thicker anti-roll bars and a track width that's 40mm wider than the Focus ST it's based on.

Recaro bucket seats, micro-fibre trim and brushed alloy accents will add some sporting zest to the RS's interior but we have to ask: with a projected price of €39,000 ($79,000 AUD) will there be any takers for the RS? After all, it's only one second faster to 100kph than the Focus ST but costs nearly twice as much. So what do all those extra Euros go into? We should find out sometime early next year, when sales are expected to begin.
