Mercedes-Benz is preparing to introduce a new ‘Splitview’ display technology on the S-Class luxury range. MB will be the first premium brand to offer the gadget which allows the driver and front passenger to view two different program images on the same display.

Being jointly developed by Mercedes and Bosch, the Splitview system is integrated into the control and display systems, called COMAND, located on the centre console of the dashboard.

Measuring 8-inchs (around 20cms), the Splitview screen is a back-lit active matrix colour display (TFT-LCD) that places pixels adjacent to each other while a dividing filter on the display surface ensures viewers only see one image on screen.

The driver retains full access to the vehicle’s standard controls via the onscreen display, including GPS functions, while the passenger may choose to watch a DVD or play music. Headphones can also be used to ensure there is no audible distraction for either occupant and a remote control is included in the system.

Mercedes-Benz is introducing the new Splitview technology in the S-Class in time for the European summer of 2009. Of course, where Mercedes goes, others follow. Don’t hold your breath, but we’ll see this technology filtering down to more accessible vehicles over the next few years.
