As manufacturers pull out of the Detroit Motor Show left, right, and centre, Subaru has announced that not only will it be appearing, but that Detroit will be home to the world debut of “a” concept vehicle.
While there’s not been confirmation of what the vehicle will be, we are all well aware that Toyota and Subaru are busily working away on a lightweight RWD coupe to be released in 2010/2011 - which is about due for a concept version we reckon…

The RWD Coupe is said to utilise a Subaru Impreza platform, with the front drive components removed, and a 2.0 litre boxer engine providing somewhere in the vicinity of 140kWs. Rear-wheel drive and light kerb-weight should make for a lively little coupe, you’d reckon, when it eventually gets to market.
Subaru and Toyota have done a bang-up job of keeping a tight lid on this one so we’ll be watching Subaru’s movements at Detroit in Janaury very closely. If we can glean any new information, you’ll be first to know. Stay tuned.

I do worry that Toyotas influence will destroy Subaru. Objectively I care for the fact that Subaru only really made inroads around the globe by going AWD across the range. Now we have a RWD Coupe being rumoured and the announcement that they may do a FWD Imprezza again for the Euro market. Is all that hard work and persistance to deveolpe a niche about to come crashing down?
lol
What was the Celica, Supra, MR-2, Soarer (pre-Lexus)?? All well renowned Toyota sports vehicles…
Being that Toyota owns a fifth of Fuji Heavy industries, using a conglomeration of Toyotas funds, R and D and Marketing machine along with Subaru’a fantastic quality, safety and performance, it should make a pure weapon…
Bring it on
Nissan owned this market. They should have made a way to get the 200SX past emission std’s.
Nobody passionate about cars can proudly claim they own a Toyota. The celica was wrong wheel drive, the MR-2 was only ever sold for those who wanted to decorate it with bobbying head dashboard ornaments and the supra & soarer, apart from not being sold here were a completely different class.
I will be a keen spectator of Subaru’s marketing teams attempt to put spin on the company direction about-face.
