What is arguably the most lethal mass produced road vehicle to come out of Stuttgart (nicknamed “The Widow-Maker” for good reason) and weighing in at just under 1200 kgs (thanks to the decision to ditch the all wheel drive, the addition of a titanium exhaust and some trimming of unnecessary interior items) the new 911 turbo based Porsche 997 GT2 has just rocked the world famous Nürburgring Nordschleife at a thumping 7mins 32secs. Thanks to the 395Kw (530hp) on tap, the GT2 managed a lap time that equates to an average speed of about 180kph!
To put this in perspective, a standard R33 GTR was the first production car to break the 8:00 barrier back in 1994. A Bugatti Veyron 16.4 did it in 7:40. For anyone who has had a crack at this track on the Xbox or PS3 this is not a bad effort for the huge 20.8km curcuit. The official record for the Nürburgring Nordschleife track is 6:11.13 set during qualifying for the 1000km Nürburgring in 1983 by Stefan Bollof in a Porsche 956 race car (see below).
The GT2 is to debut at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor show, and will be on sale in Europe in November. Expect it to hit our shores early next year priced in the well over $300,000 category.

I’m really glad that Porsche has a no-nonesense, balls-to-the-wall, better-be-good-or-it’s-your-ass sportscar in its lineup. Super powerful and all the electronic nannies are options.
Yep, my favourite Porsche. I suspect that often the people who can afford to buy a GT2 shouldn’t. It’s so hard core that it should really be left to those who know how to drive.
The one Porsche that really shouldn’t be bought for the dual purpose of transport and ’status symbol’.
amen to that,- PPPPOOOORRRSSSCCCEEE rocks for evvvvver.
