The global economic crisis is ripping through the car industry with its claws out, and it’s fair to say that the good times for manufacturers and others involved in the industry are well and truly over.

Earlier this week, the organisers of the Brisbane International Motor Show announced that the 2009 event was cancelled, on the back of falling interest and commitment from manufacturers. Mounting a major motor show display is believed to cost in excess of $1.5 million for each manufacturer and in the current belt tightening times, touring the show circuit is looking more and more like a major expense that is being deemed an unnecessary one.

The mass exodus from motor shows is affecting North American events more than any other (at the moment). Nissan is the latest manufacturer to announce that it will not be attending the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, following similar announcements from Suzuki, Mitsubishi, Ferrari, Porsche, Land Rover and Rolls-Royce.

Nissan has also pulled out of the 2009 Chicago Auto Show, held in February next year.

For the time being at least, it appears that the 2008 LA Motor Show saw the best of what Nissan has to offer, with the official unveiling of the new 370Z and the 2009 Cube - 2009 will be a leaner year.

Thankfully, our 2009 Melbourne International Motor Show should see Jeff’s Shed filled to the brim, with most manufacturers committed to displaying their wares.
