Although heralded by many as the one car that could possibly reverse GM's fortunes, the Chevy Volt is still some distance from the showroom floor. The Volt's design team isn't just sitting on its hands though, and has used the extra time to tweak the all-new hybrid's interior and make it a more practical proposition than the one seen in the latest pre-production prototype.

The majority of changes concern the Volt's in-dash LCD touchscreen, which receives a new frame that more smoothly integrates it with the rest of the centre stack. Although fixed, the screen previously appeared as though it was held in a motorised housing (below), which led to many breakages as testers attempted to 'move' it by hand. The newer enclosure also features a binnacle lid that mimics the one covering the driver's instrument panel.

The shape of the centre stack's buttons have been revised to improve feel and the central air outlets have also been refashioned. The end result is modern, clearly legible and eminently functional. However with all that glossy white plastic and no-nonsense layout, the Chevy Volt's new interior bears more than a passing resemblance to a microwave's control panel.
