Given Fords recent woes it is timely to report a little more good news for the brand. Having just posted a second quarter profit it should also be noted that the Ford Mondeo has been voted the numero uno car in the UK by Auto Express.

Personally we feel the Mondeo is a well designed and rather handsome car that will be a real asset to the Ford Australia line-up when it arrives in town later this year. Reports from all quarters are that this is one accomplished vehicle that manages to punch well above its category.

“The Mondeo delivers effortlessly, performing with aplomb everywhere. It steers beautifully, rides with a composure and smoothness that’s absent from even the best German executives, handles tautly and has a great range of engines. It’s also vast inside, rivals VW’s Passat for quality, is clearly laid out and with its great refinement and comfort levels takes the sting out of everyday driving”, note Auto Express

Fans of the UK’s Top Gear will be no stranger to the previous generation Mondeo which was regularly rated as a better buy than the 3-series BMW. Lauded for its impressive handling and dynamics the new-generation Mondeo continues to raise the bar.

We are looking forward to seeing the new Ford Mondeo in Australia and if Auto Expresses comments are anything to go by we expect that Ford will have a big hit on their hands. If you are in the market for a mid-size front wheel drive sedan then the Mondeo makes the Toyota Camry and Aurion both look a little lack-lustre.

Australian spec Mondeo pricing and specification details are not yet known but you could reasonably assume that we will see the 2.3-litre four-cylinder version and hopefully the 2.0-litre turbo-diesel currently available in Europe.

Performance fans can reasonably expect an XR version with the Volvo sourced turbo-charged five-cylinder we know from the Focus XR5. Pricing should start around $34,000 and top out a little north of $40,000 for the top spec models.
