Production of Jeep's J8 multipurpose vehicle has commenced in Egypt, with the bare-bones 4WD bringing the brand back to its simple n' rugged roots.

Designed for use as a basic transport vehicle in rough environments and based upon the 2008 Jeep Wrangler, the J8's versatile load-lugging abilities are designed to appeal to both government and civilian customers alike. In addition to the basic two-door pickup bodystyle, the J8 also comes as a four-door. The two-door version, 'troop carrier' style, can carry a huge amount of cargo or a total of eight people, while the four-door can accommodate a mix of passengers and payload.

With a 2.8-litre turbodiesel in-line four pushing out 118kW and 400Nm of torque, the J8 has more than enough grunt to tackle the most hostile of environments. That mountain of torque also gifts the J8 with a substantial 3500kg towing capacity, while a five-speed automatic transmission makes driving this workhorse a cinch.

Being a Jeep, the J8's off-road credentials are impressive. The Wrangler-based chassis has been beefed up to help it withstand abuse and to boost payload capacity to 1339kg, while the J8's axles, suspension and brakes have also undergone similar reinforcements. Jeep's Command-Trac 4WD system maintains grip on soft or slippery surfaces, while a snorkel and durable air intake system allows the J8 to ford streams up to 762mm deep and endure a five-hour sandstorm.

When the going gets really tough, the J8's reinforced tow hooks allow it to be hitched to a helicopter should things come to a complete stop.

Although Jeep hasn't specifically targeted the J8 at military customers, there's no doubt that it is likely to find itself in the service of more than one army. Beyond that, Jeep expects the J8 to find favour with a number of non-government bodies, such as humanitarian organisations like the Red Cross and Green Crescent, aid programs, mining and oil companies, survey teams, farmers and the forestry industry. Unfortunately the J8 doesn't conform to Australian Design Rules, so don't expect to see them in your local Jeep showroom.Still, one of these babies would make one hell of a paddock basher...
