On the cheap from China is soon to become a reality in the Australian car market place with the doors getting set to open to numerous cheap and cheerful but possibly not so safe Chinese imports.

Inspiring names such as Great Wall Motor, Brilliance China, Chery and Shanghai Automotive are getting set to storm our shores…seriously. While many Australians would take issue with driving something called a Chery or even a Brilliance they say that money talks and these Chinese cars are going to be cheap.

With prices possibly starting from as low as $10,990 the Chinese makes are set to shake up the brands already established in Australia and we suspect it will be the already cheap Korean and Malaysian brands who will feel the most heat.

Ateco are the company behind the imminent invasion. We know and love Ateco for bringing automotive brilliance to our shores in the form of Ferrari, Maserati and Alfa Romeo. A different type of Brilliance will soon be on the menu with cars like the Brilliance BS6 and its ilk finding homes in Australia. If you click the link you can see what happens to a Brilliance BS6 when it hits a solid object and no doubt gain an insight into what the ‘BS’ stands for.

Edward Rowe a spokesperson for Ateco said Chinese cars could reach Australian showrooms by mid-2008.

“We're still working on it. We're talking to specific companies but there is a confidentiality agreement in place. Ultimately there will be a full range of cars and commercial vehicles,” he said.

We have no issue with cheap cars being made available in Australia provided people are aware that what they are buying may not be as safe as the more expensive options being offered by the competition. Cheap is ok if you are prepared to live with the inevitable shortcomings and possible increased risk in the event of an accident.

Unfortunately in life you invariably only ever get what you pay for and you need to decide what you value the most, your bank account or your life. The Chinese will learn fast and we suspect that only a few years from now you will be able to buy cheap and relatively safe cars with weird names from China, so it may pay to wait...and see what happens.
