Remember the VW Scirocco IROC concept that we featured back in May? For those of you that don’t the image below will give you an idea what all of the excitement was about. At the time it was strongly rumoured that the Scirocco would make it to production in close to concept form…and it now appears that there is some truth to the rumours.

Car Magazine have managed to get hold of some spy shots of the new Scirocco undergoing testing in California. Although disguised it is apparent that the Scirocco will remain largely true to the original concept.

The pictures show that the concepts side crease line is retained along with the angular door mirrors and large front grille area and that the rear bodywork stays largely true to the concept with the absence of the dual exhausts being the only notable omission. Based on the VW Eos coupe-convertible platform which is one of the various Golf based platforms the production Scirocco is expected to make use of the engines available in Golf and Eos.

This means the twin-charged 1.4-litre and the 2.0-litre turbocharged mills from the GT and GTi Golf will be an option along with a 2.0-litre diesel. According to CAR an R32 style Scirocco with AWD and V6 power will not make production having been ruled out on the grounds of cost and fuel consumption.

On the inside the Scirocco will borrow heavily from its Eos and Golf cousins and will no doubt be impeccably finished in true VW fashion. We would expect the funky concepts interior to be toned down somewhat with the huge bucket seats and lairy green trim to disappear.

No doubt we will learn more as the testing of the production Scirocco continues and lets hope that VW have the good sense to ship this hot little two-door down under.
