We are quite fascinated by BMW’s upcoming X6. Until today it has been a fascination born of the thought, ‘why are they bothering’. How many similar SUV’s does one manufacturer need, especially when the X6 is based the X5.
We came across an artists impression of the new X6 over at 4Drivers Only and it all started to make sense…at least from an economic point of view. If these images of the X6 are anything to go by then it will be an unmitigated sales success. In fact we predict full order books and many months wait for your new X6.
The key with the X6 is not to think of it as being practical in the way of ‘normal’ SUV’s. Instead, it will be a stylish, up-market, performance oriented version and as you already know with good looking Italian cars there are the inevitable compromises thrust upon the owners of such glorious looking machines.
In the case of the X6, you will look fantastic wherever you are seen but it will come at the expense of load space, seating and interior headroom. But if all of that bothered you you’d just buy the X5. Wouldn’t you…?

This “sports activity coupe” (uh huh) looks like a real beast. There’s very little grace to the design and the lines just don’t want to match up.
Which makes me wonder…what chief designer could’ve been pulling the strings to make this BMW’s next 4X4 that ugly.
I actually quite like the ‘beast’ inherent in the design. To me an SUV or SAC or whatever they want to call it should look masculine. It should look like it wants to eat small children and cock its leg at every third intersection.
I particularly like the front of the X6 in the artists impressions. For a company that I think has lost its way in the design department I was quite suprised to see these images.
