Episode six of the Australian Top Gear franchise aired last night and if the ratings are anything to go by, the Aussie show’s star could well be on the rise. Now, it’s not unusual for ratings to bounce around a bit for new shows, before they eventually settle into a pattern, but 200,000 more viewers tuning in this week (compared to last) is a nice bounce.
So, what did we learn? Well, Charlie Cox thinks that the Holden Barina has been based on a Korean car for the last 10 years (it is now but it wasn’t for most of them), and despite driving a Range Rover, Audi Q7 and Lexus LX570 3,000 klms through the heart of Australia, the Top Gear boys had little to say about the actual cars. However, in a promising change of pace, they did (for the first time) actually choose a winner from this week’s comparison, and that my friends is a break-through!
Unfortunately, Charlie ruined it all by referring to the AMG SL 63 as being epic. Don’t be surprised if Charlie turns up with a perm, a comfortably bad dress sense and begins drawing breath during not-so-subtle pauses for effect in future episodes.

Regarding last night’s Top Gear, I was dissapointed to have to endure the complaints of dust entering the luxury 4wds. Driving on dusty roads, you never have the a/c on recirculate because even Holdens get dusty inside. Also you are a d-head if you drive in someone else’s dust.ie in close convoy like they did.
Thanks, Reg Wikinson
I actually forgot to watch it, how bad is that. I was more concerned with downloading UK’s Season 12 Episode 1…
Woops.
Doesn’t sound like I missed much.
+1
Still not impressed by TG:Au.
I’m trying to be impressed… I’m trying to take it as it’s own show and not a ripoff. But it’s just too difficult.
I love some of the comments they make like “knowing me, you’d think I’d love this kind of thing”…um, you’ve been going for 6 episodes, I don’t know you. FFS, you barely know each other.
And they are still trying too hard to be funny - when the crowd doesn’t laugh, it just takes away from the feel of the show, it just doesn’t have that atmosphere that the UK show has. Sounds trivial but it’s all part of what’s great about watching TG.
All I’m seeing is three bogans trying to be something they aren’t.
Its hard to better the original. Hope it has time to develop its own style.
The show is crap and probably always will be but there was a major breakthrough in last nights show. Charlie Clarkson did the test on the “epic” AMG SL63 and didn’t do any donuts!!!!!! He is still an absolute tosser though.
I say dump charlie he is boring can;t read and has if no use to the show!
I watched the new episode of the UK version (the real TOP GEAR) last night online, it made me laugh and was highly entertained, the Aussie version is bad and i think the only people watching it are the falcodore loving bogans!
SBS: Cut the Aussie version, put the UK Top Gear back on and let the bogans get back to watching footy & cricket.
I’m with you Hogan. Did the same. UK TG is in an altogether different league. The jokes are funny, the production is astounding, there is a point to everything they do, their comparisons actually make mention of the cars, their challenges have a set challenge. Not running over kids toys… Bloody hell.
Clarkson just isn’t a tosser like Cox. If you are a tosser then you are a tosser, there is nothing that can be done.
You laugh from start to finish with the TG UK guys, you cringe from start to finish with the TG Aus guys.
Bloody hell, what a debarcle.
All we need now David is for you to take over SBS programming!
yes David for SBS (soccer ball station) programing boss
David I agree 100%
I laughed until i cried over the UK Top Gear truck challenge, Clarkson getting the truck’s gear stick up the bum LOL, the poms know what they are doing, Aussie version is like a cheap knock off, they should call their Stig the ‘Aussie Stig’, all 3 presenters should be on Play School or another soft show, not Top Gear.
haa guys … i missed the show but wondering how the Lexus LX570 performed ??
Not only is IT based on the LandCruiser which i regard as the earths best 4WD but powered by a superb 5.7 v8 donk and decked out by Lexus.
With all those things highlighted … i was wondering how it performed.
It leaked dust and drank plenty of fuel. Aside from that we learnt bugger all about the car, its engine or anything else for that matter.
Well, I think I could do (we could all do) a better job than their current crop of writers and researchers. Hell, like this article states, they get even the basics wrong.
Should have been Eric Bana (funny), Neil Crompton (knowledgeable and can drive) and Grant Denyer (funny and can drive). Doubt they could have afforded that lot though. Stig should have been “the stig’s Aussie cousin” Stiggo. FFS, there can only be one Stig!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Cruiser that “won lotto” didnt go that good Jensen.
It seems toyota (and LIXAs) have dropped the ball with the 200 series with a car that drinks oil , wont change into sixth gear unless it is dropped from a 20 storey building and the 90litre subtank is filled with fancy origami third row seats.
