It came to my attention last week that Audi has been working hard to turn the recent Luxury Car Tax (LCT) increase to their sales advantage. Audi you see (they're not stupid there in Audi HQ) has been through the Australian Government's new 'green car' legislation and found that any car under $75,000 that produces a combined fuel-efficiency figure of 7.0 L/100km, or less, is exempt from LCT.

As a prestige brand, the greater part of the Audi range sits above the LCT $57,180 threshold. However, fuel efficient cars under $75,000 are fully exempt from LCT (those $75,000 and over, even if fuel-efficient, are liable for LCT). Audi, with a wide range of efficient diesel variants, many of which can sneak in below 7.0 L/100km, can trump the prices of rivals with less-efficient engines selling in the same price brackets. This brings a new take to 'green is good' for both Audi's sales and customers' wallets. But which of its cars fit into this bracket?

Well, for starters, we have the the new 2.0 TDI variant of the Audi TT, a car that has been very well received by the world's motoring press, gathering some rave reviews. There are two new Audi A6 TDI models and a new A4 Avant 27 TDI variant also here. Coming just around the corner, in November, the A5 3.0 TDI which features the largest capacity TDI diesel engine but also benefits from this new legislation.

Audi spokesman Joerg Hofman says that Audi is committed to bringing these fuel-efficient derivatives into the Audi range to make good use of the new 'green car' legislation. He went on to say:

"TDI technology is the right technology for today’s Australian consumer. We can also now pass on significant savings to customers thanks to the Government’s new exemption clause.

This presents us with an ideal opportunity to introduce new models and newer, more efficient technology which Audi has been developing for almost 30 years as part of a ‘progressive performance’ strategy," Mr Hofman said
