The upcoming 370Z has been generating a fair amount of interest, as you’d expect of the next iteration of one of Nissan’s halo cars. While I did say in that article that the 350Z is a bit long in the tooth, that’s not to say its ready for retirement.

Tanner Foust has proved that the old dog still has some tricks, by taking out America’s Formula Drift championship for a second year running in his AEM 350Z. While the car is nowhere near standard trim, with a massive intercooler clearly visible inside the front grille, the car’s underpinnings are still relatively standard and its not gutted and completely modified under the skin.

Foust’s win makes him eligible for the brand new Red Bull Formula Drift World championship, where drifters the world over will compete for the first time. Australia will be represented by Leighton Fine and Luke Fink, the top two in our own Drift Australia series.

If you’ve never been to a drifting event, I’d suggest that you go out and have a look. While the 2008 Drift Australia season has ended, a lot of drifting clubs still run practice events. The price for spectating is very reasonable, and, unlike racing which can be boring if the cars just race in a procession, you can always expect spins, bumps and scrapes when two cars are smoking the tyres sideways a handspan from each other.
